Hanyu Distillery was established by the Akuto family in Saitama, Japan, and began producing malt whisky in the 1980s before closing in 2000. Remaining stocks from the distillery were eventually secured by Ichiro Akuto, grandson of the distillery's founder, preserving an important chapter in Japanese whisky history.

Hanyu is perhaps best known among collectors for the legendary Ichiro's Malt Card Series. Released from stocks distilled between 1985 and 2000, the series has become one of the most recognisable and collectible Japanese whisky collections in the world.
