Miyagikyo Distillery was established by Masataka Taketsuru in 1969 as Nikka's second distillery, complementing the more robust style produced at Yoichi. Located in the mountains of Miyagi Prefecture, its environment and production methods help create an elegant, fruity and refined style of Japanese single malt whisky.

The contrast between Miyagikyo and Yoichi has long been an important part of Nikka's whisky making. Miyagikyo's distinctive still design and indirect steam heating contribute to a softer spirit, while maturation in a variety of casks adds further complexity.

Older age statements, discontinued bottlings and limited Miyagikyo releases have become increasingly difficult to acquire and are sought after by Japanese whisky enthusiasts and collectors.
